The key is turn off your internal editor and just write. This is the main reason I hesitated to do NaNoWriMo. So I was going back and forth. I'd seriously love to write that amount in a month, but to put it bluntly, my internal editor is a loud bitch. Really.
Well, a conversation a few weekends ago changed the game for me. My thirteen-year-old daughter asked if I knew what NaNoWriMo was? I said I did and we talked about it quite a bit. She then told me she was doing it. We looked it up online and they actually have a Young Writers program. Cool, right? I'm so proud of her that she's jumping in to do this. How can I do any less? Once we decided to do it, my other daughter, who's 11, decided to give it a shot too. After talking about it, she decided to make a goal of 10K for the month, rather than 50K. I think that is an awesome goal for her!Well, it didn't stop there. We threw down the challenge to Ms. Gwen Cease. Even added a "do you wanna be beat by 11 and 13 year olds?" for good measure. :-D Gwen jumped right on board, but then upped the ante. Each week, we are going to check in here. The person who has written the most that week will win. Win what you ask? The PERFECT prize. A gift card to....
Here's to me, my girls and my bestie writing like crazy. Yay us. And I'm TOTALLY going to win each week, but I'll give the girls a sip of my fabulous drink, 'cause I'm nice that way.
Hugs,
~J

I'll be watching this competition closely. In fact, I'm going to up the ante! I'm going to send another Starbucks gift card to whoever wins, because seriously?You can never have too much coffee! :D So prepare to kick ass, ladies!
ReplyDeleteA Starbucks card is a beautiful, beautiful incentive!
ReplyDeleteI am so winning this because Starbucks is a huge incentive to me. And if Bron is throwing in an extra card watch out world. Maybe I'll finish 2 books in a month. LOL Can't wait till November 1!!!!
ReplyDeleteSo cool to get the girls involved! I've tried to get my daughter interested, but she writes at her own pace. At least she's writing, right?
ReplyDelete@Bronwyn upping the ante! DD1 is pumped. :)
ReplyDelete@Margaret Yes, yes, it is. *happy sigh*
@Gwen You just THINK you're winning. :-P
@Molly Hey, if she's writing that is what counts! My younger daughter is frustrated because school work is kinda getting in the way of writing, but I told her we all have to deal with that kind of thing, and to keep plugging away. Even if she doesn't "win", I think a mom and girls Starbucks date is in our future. :-D
Happy Thanksgiving. Wish you all the luck in the world with your writing.
